The government of Equatorial Guinean Prime Minister Miguel Abia Biteo Borico resigned Aug. 10 following accusations by President Teodoro Obiang that it had "worked badly." The forced resignation of Abia's government further consolidates the power of Obiang, who has long fretted over his power base and who will succeed him to rule Africa's third-largest oil-producing country. Despite Obiang's expressions of concern over social policies, including education and public health, no policy shift in the country's strategic oil sector will occur as a result of the government's resignation.
